FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions…
Do I need to book in advance?
We recommend that you do, especially during school holidays and bank holiday weekends.
The site does get busy in peak season, and pitches are limited to keep things spacious.
Call or text Anne on 07969 529929 to check availability or make a booking.
What time can I arrive?
You’re welcome to arrive from 4pm onwards. Sometimes we are able to accommodate you earlier so please speak to Anne.
Please aim to leave your pitch by 11am on departure day. If you’d like to arrive early or leave later, just ask and Anne will do her best to accommodate.
How do I pay?
An initial payment is usually taken at the time of booking following return of your booking form. The balance is due 3 months prior to your stay. The whole amount is due on booking if you book less than 3 months in advance. Anne will confirm details when you book.
Are children welcome?
Absolutely. Children 3 and under stay free, and 16 and under are half price.
The site is spacious and natural, but not completely fenced, sloped in areas and with uneven grass, so supervision is needed – especially around fire pits.
Are dogs allowed?
Yes – we love dogs, they are very welcome and they stay free. We have Amber, our resident collie on site for quality control!
While we would not wish to welcome a huge pack of dogs, we are open to discussion about a small number so if you want to bring more than two please have a chat with Anne. We are sorry we cannot accept any banned breeds.
All dogs must be kept on a lead around the site and near livestock or wildlife (including hedgehogs), and especially our resident sheep. Please pick up after your dog and use the bins provided. Please also take note of coastal path safety with dogs.
Can I have a fire or BBQ?
Yes – every pitch has its own fire pit.
Disposable BBQs are banned due to two accidents. You must not light fires on the ground, excepting the fire pit.
Fires must never be left unattended, only lit when you’re about to use it and must be fully extinguished with water after use, even if they look like they have gone out fully. Please take extra care in very dry conditions.
What facilities are available?
All guests have access to:
- Fire pit on every pitch – bring your own wood or pick some up nearby
- Water tap adjacent to each pitch
- Hot showers – no tokens, no timers. Please no more than 5 minutes.
- Toilets – clean and regularly checked
- Washing-up sinks – under cover, with hot water
- Fridges – shared access for food storage
- Electric hook-up (EHU) – optional and charged separately
- Waste disposal – including recycling and general waste bins
- Chemical Disposal Point (CDP) – easy to access
- Low lighting – kept to a minimum so you can enjoy the stars
And in addition Anne has some of her own equipment you may borrow such as:
- Kayaks
- Stand-up paddleboards (SUPs)
- Bodyboards
- Wetsuits (a few sizes available)
Just ask what’s available. You borrow at your own risk and are responsible for any damage or loss. You’ll find more details by clicking here.
Is there a shop or café nearby?
Abercastle itself doesn’t have a shop, but there are small shops, cafés and pubs in Trefin, Mathry, Fishguard, and St Davids, all a short drive or bus ride away. There is a fuel garage at Square and Compass which also has a small SPAR shop.
What’s the mobile signal and WiFi like?
There is limited campsite WiFi. This is fine for accessing emails or brief google searches but not suitable for streaming or gaming. Most mobile networks have good 3G/4G coverage, depending on your provider.
Are large groups allowed?
The campsite is quiet and peaceful, so large groups are generally not accepted, unless arranged in advance. If you’re travelling with friends or family across several pitches, please discuss it with Anne when booking.
What’s the access like for campervans or caravans?
Access is via the top entrance, not through Garn Isaf or behind Y Garn.
The site is suitable for campervans and small to medium caravans. Please bring a long hook-up lead if you’re using EHU, as distances vary between EHU points.
Is there drinking water on site?
Yes – all water taps on the campsite provide safe, mains-supplied drinking water. Each pitch has a tap nearby.
Can I choose my pitch?
Pitches aren’t numbered, and Anne will show you what’s available when you arrive. If you have a preference (shade, near facilities, etc.), just mention it when booking – we’ll do our best. Our regulars sometimes ask for their favourite pitch and we always try to accommodate!
Are the pitches level?
Most pitches are fairly level, but as it’s a natural field, some have a gentle slope. If you need a flat spot (e.g. for a campervan or medical needs), do bring your chocks.
Are there any sea views?
Yes – from the top of the campsite, there are lovely views towards the sea and headland, especially at sunset. Pitches themselves are mostly surrounded by hedgerows for shelter and privacy.
Can I charge my phone or devices?
Yes – if you have electric hook-up, you can charge devices at your pitch. There are a few electric points in the shower and washing block facilities. Please note: devices are left at your own risk.
I’m walking the coast path, can I camp with you?
Yes. Many people walk the coast path and stay for just one night, while others come alone for peace and quiet. You’re most welcome.
Is the site suitable for people with reduced mobility?
Parts of the campsite are sloped and grassy, so access may be limited depending on your needs. Please contact Anne to discuss your situation and she’ll advise what’s possible.
Where’s the nearest bus stop?
The Strumble Shuttle (bus 404) stops at Abercastle (request stop) and you can hail it at the entrance to the campsite. It links St Davids, Fishguard and the surrounding villages – perfect for coast path walkers or days out without a car. The shuttle runs during the summer months and further information can be found here: Strumble Shuttle Bus
Are day visitors allowed?
Yes, you’re welcome to have day visitors, as long as it’s discussed with Anne in advance, they park at your pitch (not at the beach) and leave the site by 10pm. Please keep noise to a minimum and respect the peaceful setting.
What should I bring?
We recommend bringing:
- Towels and tea towels
- Washing-up bits (sponge, liquid, etc.)
- Torch or headlamp – the site is unlit at night
- Warm layers – it can get cool after dark
- Firewood or kindling (if you plan to use your fire pit)…and matches!
- Anne will provide the essentials where needed, but a few extras help make your stay comfortable.
